प्रस्तावना – आज का मानव तकनीकी के क्षेत्र में आगे बढ़ने के लिए बेतहाशा व्याकुल है। प्रतिपल उसकी यही आकांक्षा रहती है कि इस क्षेत्र में नये कीर्तिमान किस प्रकार स्थापित किये जायें। आजकल संस्थाओं तथा उद्योग-धन्धों में कम्प्यूटर का प्रयोग विशाल पैमाने पर हो रहा है। कम्प्यूटर सूचनाएँ एकत्र करने के साथ ही उनसे निष्कर्ष भी निकालता है जो मानव के लिए बहुत लाभकारी तथा मार्गदर्शक प्रमाणित होते हैं। ये एक प्रकार से मानव के मस्तिष्क का ही प्रतिरूप है। जो कार्य मानव मस्तिष्क सम्पादित करता है वही काम कम्प्यूटर करता है।
कम्प्यूटर का विकास एवं इतिहास- यह बात 1000 ई. पू. की है जब जापान के अन्तर्गत ऐबेकस नामक यन्त्र तैयार किया गया। इसके माध्यम से गणित के प्रश्नों को हल किया जाता था। फ्रांस में एक प्रतिभाशाली युवक का जन्म हुआ जिसका नाम ब्लेन पैसकल था। इसने सन् 1673 ई. में कम्प्यूटर को बनाकर तैयार किया। इस कम्प्यूटर से छोटे-छोटे पहिए सम्बद्ध थे। आधुनिक कम्प्यूटर के आविष्कार का श्रेय इंग्लैण्ड के चार्ल्स बैबेज को जाता है। यह बहुत ही कुशल गणितज्ञ था। उन्होंने यह कार्य 1833 ई. में सम्पन्न किया।
कम्प्यूटर की लोकप्रियता एवं दूरगामी परिणामों से प्रभावित होकर भारत सरकार ने भी सन् 1965 ई. में इसका आयात किया। उस समय इसका मूल्य बहुत बढ़ा-चढ़ा था। सन् 1985 में निजी कम्प्यूटर का आगमन हुआ जो बहुत ही महँगा साबित हुआ। सौभाग्यवश सन् 1986 ई. में पूर्व के लगभग आधे मूल्य में इसका आयात किया गया। अब इसका उपयोग शिक्षा क्षेत्र में भी व्यापक एवं विशाल पैमाने पर किया जा रहा है।
कम्प्यूटर खुद गणना करके दुरूह समस्याओं का निपटारा चन्द मिनटों में कर रहा है।
कम्प्यूटर क्या है ?–
कम्प्यूटर एक यान्त्रिक मस्तिष्क है, जिसमें अनेक प्रकार की गणित विषयक सूत्रों एवं तथ्यों का संचालन कार्यक्रम पहले से ही सम्पादित कर देना पड़ता है। कम्प्यूटर बहुत ही अल्पावधि में गणना करके तथ्यों को नेत्रपटल के समक्ष उपस्थित कर देता है।
कम्प्यूटर का उपयोग-
(1) औद्योगिकी के क्षेत्र में मशीनों तथा कारखानों का संचालन करने के लिए कम्प्यूटर को प्रयोग में लाया जा रहा हैं।
(2) सूचना एवं समाचार के सन्दर्भ में- सूचना एवं समाचार प्रेषण के सन्दर्भ में भी
कम्प्यूटर महती सेवा कर रहा है। ‘कम्प्यूटर नेटवर्क’ के द्वारा विश्व भर के नगर एक-दूसरे से एक परिवार की भाँति जुड़ गये हैं।
(3) बैंकिंग के क्षेत्र में बैंकों में हिसाब-किताब रखने के लिए कम्प्यूटर का पर्याप्त मात्रा में प्रयोग हो रहा है। यही नहीं घर के कम्प्यूटरों को बैंकों के कम्प्यूटरों से सम्बद्ध कर दिया जाता है।
(4) विज्ञान के क्षेत्र में- आज अन्तरिक्ष विज्ञान के क्षेत्र में कम्प्यूटर राम-बाण सिद्ध हुआ है। इसके द्वारा अन्तरिक्ष के विशाल पैमाने पर चित्र एकत्र किये जा रहे हैं।
आज जिन्दगी का कोई भी ऐसा पहलू शेष नहीं बचा है जिसमें कम्प्यूटर का प्रयोग नहीं हो रहा हो। इससे वायुयानों तथा रेलों में आरक्षण सम्पन्न किया जा रहा है। चाहे चिकित्सा हो, चुनाव हो, युद्ध का मैदान हो एवं मौसम विषयक जानकारी हासिल करनी हो, कम्प्यूटर एक स्वामिभक्त सेवक की भाँति आपकी प्रतिपल सेवा करने को उद्यत है। यद्यपि कम्प्यूटर मानव मस्तिष्क की तुलना में कार्य को बहुत कम समय में सम्पन्न कर लेता है, परन्तु यह मशीन मात्र है। अतः इसमें मानवीय भावनाओं, विचारों तथा संवेगों का नितान्त अभाव रहता है।
उपसंहार – धीरे-धीरे हर क्षेत्र में कम्प्यूटर अनिवार्य हो रहा है। भारतवर्ष में भी कम्प्यूटर युग प्रारम्भ हो चुका है। अब तो व्यवहार, दोस्ती, मिलन तथा आपसी शिष्टाचार का ढंग भी हमें कम्प्यूटर सिखा रहा है। यह एक प्रकार से मानव के अस्तित्व के लिए एक खतरा है। कम्प्यूटर सैकड़ों मनुष्यों का कार्य अकेले ही पूरा करके सैकड़ों मानवों के पेट पर लात मार रहा है। यह देश की धरती पर बेरोजगारों की संख्या में बढ़ोत्तरी कर रहा है। उपलब्ध आँकड़ों में तनिक-सा भी हेर-फेर करे-कराये पर पानी फेर देता है।
कम्प्यूटर का प्रयोग कीजिए, परन्तु सावधानी से। इसे स्वामी न समझकर सेवक रूप में अंगीकार कीजिए। इसके ऊपर सीमा से अधिक निर्भर रहना मानव मस्तिष्क की अवहेलना करना है। इस देश की धरती पर स्वामी विवेकानन्द, दयानन्द सरस्वती तथा स्वामी रामतीर्थ जैसे महान् मनीषी जन्म धारण कर चुके हैं जिनके समक्ष ‘कम्प्यूटर’ कहीं नहीं भी ठहरता है।

Introduction – Modern man is intensely eager to advance in the field of technology. He constantly aspires to set new milestones in this arena. Nowadays, computers are being used on a massive scale across institutions and industries. Beyond merely gathering information, computers derive conclusions from it that prove highly beneficial and serve as a guide for humanity. In a sense, the computer is a replica of the human brain; it performs the very tasks that the human brain carries out.
Evolution and History of the Computer – The story dates back to 1000 BC, when a device known as the ‘Abacus’ was created in Japan; it was used to solve mathematical problems. Later, a talented young man named Blaise Pascal was born in France; he developed a computer in 1673 AD that incorporated small, interconnected wheels. The credit for inventing the modern computer goes to Charles Babbage of England—a highly skilled mathematician—who accomplished this feat in 1833 AD.
Impressed by the computer’s popularity and its far-reaching impact, the Government of India imported it in 1965 AD, though the cost was exorbitant at the time. Personal computers arrived in 1985, proving to be very expensive. Fortunately, in 1986, they were imported at roughly half the previous price. Today, computers are being utilized extensively in the field of education as well. Computers perform calculations and resolve complex problems in a matter of minutes.
What is a computer? A computer is a mechanical brain into which programs—comprising various mathematical formulas and factual data—must be pre-loaded. It performs calculations rapidly and displays the results on the screen.
(1) In the industrial sector, computers are used to operate machinery and factories.
(2) Regarding information and news—computers play a vital role in the transmission of information and news. Through ‘computer networks,’ cities across the globe have become interconnected, much like a single family.
(3) In the banking sector, computers are extensively used for maintaining accounts and records. Furthermore, home computers can be linked directly to bank systems.
(4) In the field of science—computers have proven to be an invaluable tool in space science, enabling the collection of vast amounts of imagery from space.
Today, there is no aspect of life where computers are not utilized. They facilitate reservation systems for air and rail travel. Whether in medicine, elections, the battlefield, or weather forecasting, the computer stands ready to serve us at every moment, much like a loyal servant. Although a computer completes tasks much faster than the human brain, it remains merely a machine; it completely lacks human emotions, thoughts, and feelings.
Conclusion—Computers are gradually becoming indispensable in every field. The computer age has dawned in India as well. Computers are now even shaping the way we interact, socialize, meet, and observe mutual etiquette. In a sense, this poses a threat to human existence; by single-handedly performing the work of hundreds of people, the computer is effectively depriving them of their livelihoods. It is swelling the ranks of the unemployed in the country. Even the slightest manipulation of available data can render the entire outcome worthless.
Use computers, but do so with caution. Treat the computer as a servant rather than a master. Excessive reliance on it amounts to disregarding the human intellect. Great luminaries like Swami Vivekananda, Dayanand Saraswati, and Swami Ram Tirath have graced this land—figures against whom the computer pales into insignificance.
